How to change the heater radiator?

An important part of the heating system is the heater radiator. Its purpose is to warm the air that enters the cabin. The radiator failure is fraught with very unpleasant consequences. And absence of heating is not the most dangerous of them. Since the heater is connected to the cooling system, other units, including the engine, can suffer if it fails. Therefore, it is important to understand how to change the heater radiator, and in what cases it should be done. Such work can be done on your own, although it is better to entrust it to experienced craftsmen. But sometimes it’s easier to scrap a car. And not only easier, but also more profitable. In this case, there is no need to waste time looking for spare parts. It is better to ask for help here right away:

How to understand that the radiator is out of order

You can notice that the radiator is out of order even without special diagnostics. This is indicated by such signs:

The flow of cold air in the cabin, even when the engine is warmed up,
active decrease in the level of coolant, which is found in the cabin or dripping under the car,
fogging of car windows, as if they are covered with a greasy film.

Most often, the failure of the radiator occurs for two reasons. It’s either the tubes get clogged with time, w

hich often happens because of improper use of the system, when water or low-quality antifreeze is poured into it (or antifreeze brands with different characteristics are mixed), or because of violation of tightness. This can be caused by corrosion, which is also due to wear and tear of the system, the use of low-quality antifreeze or mechanical damage.

Repair or flush the radiator?

If there is a lot of wear and tear, it is better not to repair the leak, not to try to fix it with sealants or other similar means. This kind of repair will only lead to the fact that the problems will only accumulate. It is necessary to change the heater radiator immediately, before other nodes fail.

If there is no damage and wear, just for some reason there was a clog, then you can flush the radiator, and it must be done separately from the cooling system. For flushing, special reagents are used, they are selected in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to change the radiator

For an independent replacement of the device, you will need standard tools – keys and screwdrivers for disassembly. It is necessary to prepare in advance antifreeze (and a container for draining the old), as well as sealant, which is used to improve the fixation of the casings. Before you start the work, you need to read the instructions. Different models of cars may have their own peculiarities of the location of the heater radiator, so you need to find out these nuances first. This will determine how easy it will be to access the radiator. In many cars, it is located quite close, under the hood, in such cases, the work is easy to perform even by yourself. If its location – in the cabin, you will have to remove the torpedo, which requires special skills and accuracy. It is better to entrust such work to masters.

It is also important to comply with all safety requirements. As when working with any other nodes, you must first remove the battery terminals.

After the motorist gets access to the radiator, he will need to drain the old antifreeze. It is possible to reuse it, but only if the composition turns out to be clean. The radiator is carefully removed, with the help of sealant seal the mounts of the casings. After that, you can install a new radiator and fill with antifreeze.
